A former military man and marching band member who roamed the US during his formative years, DJ and producer James Bangura harnesses the cultural references of his youth to create genre-bending tunes. Raised in Alabama, with a passage through New York and California in his teens, and eventually settling in D.C., Bangura hops from drum & bass to house and breakbeat to techno. After a particularly challenging period, Bangura wrote his debut EP in the span of a week while camped out in a hotel. The resulting layers of musical texture imbued with introspection, intimacy and grief granted him a recognition upon which he has been building during the pandemic, taking this chance, while everybody has time to really listen, to advocate for the Black roots of techno and house music.

Who is James Bangura?
An individual with an innate passion for house and techno music stemming from North America.

Where is James Bangura from?
I’ve lived all over the United States and that’s really helped me understand people better. Especially regional nuances or details.

What is James Bangura's community?
A lot of the people who I’m close with I met during the early Soundcloud days, and we bonded over our just love for music and nerding out over production.

How does your work reflect who you are and where you're from?
My music is influenced by the experiences I’ve had throughout my life versus where I’m from. Immersing myself in that versus basing it off of where I’m from has helped me really develop my own unique sound.
