Rastronaut is a Lisbon-based DJ and producer with a special taste for the bass-heavy side of global club music. His love for the sounds of the UK underground, brought together with the rhythms of the global south, inspire his original productions and high-powered DJ sets which can be regularly heard on Enchufada club nights and releases.
His sets are built to inspire some serious dance floor perspiration, as is proven by his explosive Boiler Room performance, as well as numerous appearances on festival stages such as Nuits Sonores, NOS Alive or Paredes de Coura to name only a few.
Who is Rastronaut?
Rastronaut is the name I use when I DJ and make music.
Where is Rastronaut from?
I was born and raised in Lisbon, Portugal, where I still live today. However, the idea to start making music as Rastronaut actually came up when I was living in Barcelona, Spain, so I guess Rastronaut is a bit from there too.
What is Rastronaut's community?
I’ve always loved club music and the club itself, so first and foremost I would say that the crowd in that loud and anonymous dark room is my community. That’s where I really feel at home when I’m DJing, and where I feel the music I play makes the most sense. But I’m also very much a part and a product of my city, and the very specific blend of sounds, colors, languages and cultures that make Lisbon what it is. Being the capital of a former colonial empire, there are huge immigrant communities from Cape Verde, Angola, Brazil and so on, whose music, food and expressions have changed the city’s cultural landscape forever and I wouldn’t have it any other way. So, this is also my community, the people making Lisbon plural, open and vibrant every day.
How does your work reflect who you are and where you're from?
Depending on where you live in Lisbon, you can’t really escape music from Lusophone Africa or Brazil, for example. And not only because my parent’s generation was already in love with Cape Verdean Morna, Angolan semba or Brazilian bossa nova (shout out mom and dad), but also because you’ll be on the bus and hear kids playing kuduro beats on their phones, or have pimped out cars blasting kizomba for the whole neighborhood. At the same time, you’re going out with your friends to anything from drum & bass and techno raves to dancehall sound clashes and rap shows, just to name a few. Growing up exposed to all these sounds and styles kinda makes it feel like it’s all connected, and everything makes sense together - and in a very real way it is - which is still 100% my approach to club music when I DJ or make my own tracks.
